Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams (MGBW) joined the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC) out of a commitment to improving best practices for sustainability. Since joining SFC in 2010, the company has made use of many SFC resources to reduce the company’s environmental footprint and to promote the cause.
The founders began having deeper conversations with their existing vendors and finding new suppliers who shared similar values and commitments to transparency and sustainability. MGBW helped create an atmosphere of caring which led all involved to learn more about implementation and due diligence.
MGBW trains its retail representatives on the importance of forest management and asks them to share this information directly with customers. One of the reasons why people love working for MGBW is the company’s stand on the triple bottom line of sustainability: people-planet-profits. Visitors to MGBW stores learn not just about the company’s work to protect the planet, but also about its determination to provide comfort and good customer service. The company is working to create a healthy future for everyone, so their policies regarding environmental conservation follow naturally.
MGBW uses its influence to promote sustainability. For instance, it discusses responsible wood use with designers who in turn provide inspiration to shoppers and ultimately help educate them on the benefits of responsible wood use.
Wood represents a small percentage of MGBW’s raw materials base. Currently, the retailer recycles over a million pounds from its waste stream each year. In addition, MGBW staff is always looking for what they can do next in its sustainability efforts. You can read more about MGBW’s efforts to conserve resources here.
