Sklar Furnishings has been committed to providing a Sustainable Future since its inception in 2002. Co-founders Pat and Rick Howard’s goal is “to be good neighbors and positively impact the community we live and work in while being good stewards to our planet.” Sklar won the 2018 Retailer of the Year Award from the North American Home Furnishings Association, in part because the design and retail firm provides an exceptional example of sustainability in the industry.
Pat and Rick make sure to question all of their suppliers about what the products are made of and their use of anything that might harm the environment. Sklar joined the Sustainable Furnishings Council early on and has implemented many of SFC’s recommended best practices. Sklar also works with The National Forest Foundation, and donates a tree to a Florida forest for every purchase of a wood product. Sklar is continuously increasing the amount of wood in its product lines that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), further protecting the planet.
Employees at Sklar are proud to talk about the company’s sustainable partners and tell the company story. Several staff members have attended GREENleaders, SFC’s certified sustainability training, making them GREEN Accredited Professionals. The Green Committee, a recent initiative at Sklar, features a group of employees on a mission to generate new ideas and find new ways to conserve energy and resources. These folks have pledged to ask “What’s it made of?” and are on watch for a variety of toxic chemicals in products they consider for the store.
