Plank & Coil Website | Back to Scorecard
Plank & Coil started out in 2006 with the goal of integrating health and sustainability into home furnishings. It offers products that are made organically, without harsh chemical treatments.
The biggest challenge as a retailer is getting full disclosure from suppliers, especially large suppliers. Owner Dennis Rose says the best way to overcome the disclosure challenge is to establish working relationships with people who work for the supplier. He also points out that responsible procurement can mean different things. The Forest Stewardship Council is a valued standard, of course. Small, carefully managed forests and locally reclaimed materials are also important variables in the sustainability equation.
Plank & Coil customers, particularly chemically sensitive persons, are grateful for the shop’s efforts. Having disclosure of materials and finishes is comforting to folks who suffer from exposure to certain chemicals. There is plenty of information in the store explaining the materials used in the furniture and staff members often direct curious customers to a manufacturer’s website for technical information. They also keep wood samples in the showroom to use as teaching tools. There are GREEN Accredited Professionals on staff and everyone is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the cause.
Mr. Rose notes that “Clean products can make a big difference in our health and way of life. This is global and it is personal; each step, each product can make a difference.” For more on how Plank & Coil uses materials responsibly, please see their website.
