Crate and Barrel works with vendors and artisans from around the globe. Sustainability, including sustainable forestry, are fundamental guiding principles for Crate and Barrel and its parent company, the Otto Group. Its goal is to offer customers the best design, quality and value throughout its assortment.Â
In addition to developing more products using sustainable and eco-friendly materials, Crate and Barrel is adapting these principles in other areas; including eco-friendly packaging materials, waste reduction, and gift card recycling (more here). Under the Otto Group, the retailer expanded that mission, taking on a more structured approach to ensuring that the quality timber it uses to produce its products is sustainably sourced and that efforts are being made to renew one of earth’s most valuable resources: our forests.
Â
Crate and Barrel is dedicated to developing products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The wood used in a selection of the dining and home office collections is certified by the FSC — the gold standard designation for wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally appropriate, and economically viable.
Crate and Barrel offers innovative designs featuring reclaimed and repurposed woods, from buildings no longer in use in China and Indonesia to telephone poles from rural Brazil. These reclaimed woods add character and a global sense of history to several of the collections.
Crate and Barrel customers are asking for more sustainable or responsibly sourced products, both in store and on its website. In the last year, families have made GreenGuard the #1 sustainability term searched on its website. FSC, Reclaimed Wood, Organic Cotton, and Recycle are in the top 10 most searched sustainability terms. As the retailer continues to share the stories behind its products, customers will be able to find the products they want and need.  Crate and Barrel wants to ensure that design, experience, and sustainability are a part of its customer’s journey.
As a company, Crate and Barrel believes in preserving the resources that sustain us. Crate and Barrel’s purpose is to help people love how they live in moments that matter. Those experiences are made more meaningful when the life cycle of a product is a sustainable one. For the company, green is not a trend — it’s an ongoing mission. Its commitment will continue as it develops new ways to improve everything it touches, from the products it designs to the way it delivers them to your home.
At Crate and Barrel, people are always looking for better ways to be socially, environmentally, and economically responsible in the places they source from, work and serve. From its offices and warehouses to its stores and your homes, Crate and Barrel continuously assesses the impact its products have on the land around us.
