As a founding Member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council (and Silver Level Exemplary Member), Room & Board has always been interested in protecting the earth. Since its beginnings, the retailer operated under rules of responsible wood sourcing. Vendor Resource Manager, Steve Freeman, has served on the SFC Board of Directors since the Board was formed, and Room & Board serves as an SFC Education Partner. The Room & Board buying team is well known in the industry for setting a very high bar.
Room & Board works closely with everyone along its supply chain to mitigate costs and create better value. Having deep relationships throughout the supply chain makes a big difference. Employees and sales staff are also very knowledgeable and capable of tracing the source of a given piece of furniture. That’s terrific supply chain stewardship and wonderful customer service.
Urban wood and salvaged sources are an up and coming area that is largely untapped and a great way to sequester carbon. Room & Board partners with the USDA National forest service in its urban woods work. Eager to spread the knowledge it gained on reclaiming and reusing urban salvage, Room & Board also partners with the US Forest Service in offering the Urban Wood Academy, a workshop on building regional wood economies that support the US wood industry.
Room & Board has GREEN Accredited Professionals on staff in several stores, and is proud to display the SFC Silver Level Exemplary Member seal on its catalog. In fact, Room & Board was one of the first retailers to be recognized with SFC Exemplary Level Membership. This company led the way in removing flame retardants and other harmful chemicals from furnishings. It is committed to US-made local manufacturing for decades.
