LaDiff has been in business for 39 years and has always been environmentally concerned. Owners Sarah Paxton and Andy Thornton are committed to the responsible use of forest resources in selecting furniture and in the relationships they develop and nurture with suppliers. They actively seek partnerships and relationships with small and independent family owned businesses in the US, Canada, and Europe that are conscious and in control of their sourcing of lumber. Sarah and Andy do their utmost to ensure that any wood product is legitimately harvested and, where possible, they select material and suppliers that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). For more on LaDiff’s sustainability policies, please see their website.
Where possible, LaDiff sources and uses recycled or reclaimed material. Many of the displays in the showroom are made of recycled lumber from Andy and Sarah’s home and reclaimed timber from their land. Additionally, many of the product lines available at LaDiff are made by companies that take sustainability seriously, such as SFC Members Copeland Furniture and Greenington Fine Bamboo.
LaDiff works with trusted suppliers and values staying informed about the origin of wood in its products. Ideally they request certification of sourcing practices and if this is not available they research back stories to ensure legitimate sourcing.
Additionally, LaDiff asked SFC to provide programming for staff and even posted SFC signage in the break room to remind employees of the importance of responsible wood use. The showroom floor also features signage that tells customers about specific product lines, including several collections that carry information on where and how the wood was procured.
LaDiff is a closely held, family owned business whose owners feel a powerful need to minimize its carbon footprint. Staffers try to relay that message to customers daily, with no hectoring! The shop was voted Best Local Furniture Store by the readers of Style Weekly seven times over eight years and Best Richmond Furniture Store by readers of R·Home Magazine every year 2000-2019!
